Messe Basel and double-decker stands
Messe Basel, operated by MCH Group, sits in central Basel and offers around 141,000 square metres of total space across five halls. Of that, roughly 83,000 square metres is suitable for multi-storey stands. An Event Hall provides around 3,300 square metres of pillar-free space for up to 3,000 people, supported by 25 conference rooms. One of the halls, opened in 2013, was designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
That double-decker figure is the detail worth planning around. Two-storey stands need structural sign-off, adequate ceiling height and floor loading, and many venues restrict them to specific halls. Basel clearing well over half its space for them is unusual, and it makes the venue a realistic option if you want a large two-level build with meeting space above the stand floor. If that is your intention, confirm the hall before the design is finalised, and expect engineering sign-off to be part of the programme rather than an afterthought.
Art Basel and the Swiss customs question
