Book Summary:

Bren Berry was really reluctant to leave her young children and go into the classroom of older children. Since she had several nieces and nephews, she thought she knew what to expect. But boy was she surprised. They were ready for her with all kinds of tricks up their sleeves . While this is a fun look at children entering middle school, some of the events depicted in this book actually happened in the classroom or in her presence . She is just grateful that she survived to tell you about them.

Book Summary:

“One of the only people I know who pulls off punk rock and self-help simultaneously.”—Conner Habib Power is what naturally results when everything needless and self-defeating is stripped out of your life. Are you prepared to dedicate 30 days to throwing off whatever conceals the greater self you have always suspected you are? If you’re unsure do not even begin this book. In The Miracle Month, Mitch Horowitz, “a cross between Aleister Crowley and Alan Watts” (Duncan Trussell), provides a 30-day, self-enforced academy that disrupts, upends, and overthrows every social and self-imposed barrier to your innate power. “This book,” Mitch writes, “is for people who would prefer nearly any alternative than to slide back into the anxiety, self-limitations, and half-in, half-out existence that they have known until now. Does that sound extreme? It is not. It is an open door to change.” Mitch helps you “Understand Power” (Day 9), “Give Up One Thing That Causes You Pain” (Day 13), realize “You Are Not Someone Else’s Decision” (Day 27), and confront the question: “Do You Enjoy Suffering?” (Day 26). In 30 realizable, graspable steps you will reverse years of peer-enforced conformity and self-negation to become who you—rightly—sense you are. “Horowitz comes across as the real deal: he is an authentic ‘adept mind’ and he knows his stuff.”—Boing Boing “Convincing...takes us far from naïve doctrines.”—Paris Match “Mitch is solid gold.”—David Lynch

A Thousand Days in the Life of a Deportee Who Was Lucky

Book Summary:

Holocaust survivors often say that the circumstances in which they defied death were a matter of sheer luck. They also mention the random, arbitrary nature of the Nazi concentration camp system. Theodore Woda puts luck at the heart of his story, showing that, although the Third Reich was intent on destroying all the Jews of Europe, gas chambers or a slow death by starvation and/or mistreatment did not always lie at the end of the road. It cannot really be said that luck was on Theodore’s side when the Gestapo arrested him during a spot check for the sole crime of being Jewish and deported him from the Drancy camp on transport 33. His “luck”, then, was relative. It came into play when the train taking him to the Auschwitz extermination camp stopped at the railway station in Opole, where he and some fellow deportees were selected for slave labor. But during the 32 months he spent in three slave labor and two concentration camps in Silesia, Theodore’s “luck” did not keep him safe from hunger, beatings, unhygienic conditions and abuse. As he relates in plain, matter-of-fact words, he was “lucky” to work in workshops, know German and possess the resourcefulness to live by his wits. Under those circumstances, he managed not only to find food to supplement his insufficient diet, but to correspond with his family and even receive parcels sent to him under the names of men in the STO (the French acronym for Service de travail obligatoire, or Compulsory Labor Service). In sum, he was “lucky” to return alive from the maelstrom that claimed the lives of his mother, two of his brothers, one of his sisters, his uncle and his aunt. His testimonial has been unpublished until now.

Book Summary:

With the recent changes in the health care industry, surgeons face increasing pressure to devote their time to their clinical activities, thus limiting their research efforts. It is essential that young and creative individuals are encouraged to perform research and are given incentives to participate in research under the mentorship of more experienced research investigators. Surgical Research is the first book to include all the information necessary for the surgical scientist to perform a research experiment. The editors have assembled outstanding, expert investigators in multiple surgical fields and asked them to describe how they achieve their research accomplishments. In Surgical Research, these experts in the field have outlined everything involved in preparing and conducting a research project. Some of the topics covered in the book include how to state a research question, how to review the available information, how to write research protocol, how to obtain grant money for the experiment, how to analyze the data, and how to present the findings. Also discussed are the ethics of animal and human experimentation along with the history and philosophy of surgical research. To continue to advance technologies and surgical methods, research must continually be performed. Potentially great discoveries are being missed because would-be researchers do not know where to start or how to conduct research, and therefore do not even try. This book provides prospective researchers with all the basic steps needed to perform a research experiment in the surgical field. No student, resident, or fellow should start a research project without this book and no senior surgical scientist should be without it occupying a prominent position in the library. Key Features * The first complete compendium detailing the process and procedures to perform surgical research * Provides details on and compares various methodologies * A "must have" resource for the surgical resident, fellow, or scientist * Includes a listing of resources and web sites to help the researcher even further

Book Summary:

Winner of the Society of American Historians' Francis Parkman Prize Winner of the PEN / Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography Best Biography of 2016, True West magazine Winner of the Western Writers of America 2017 Spur Award, Best Western Biography Finalist, National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography Long-listed for the Cundill History Prize One of the Best Books of 2016, The Boston Globe The epic life story of the Native American holy man who has inspired millions around the world Black Elk, the Native American holy man, is known to millions of readers around the world from his 1932 testimonial Black Elk Speaks. Adapted by the poet John G. Neihardt from a series of interviews with Black Elk and other elders at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Black Elk Speaks is one of the most widely read and admired works of American Indian literature. Cryptic and deeply personal, it has been read as a spiritual guide, a philosophical manifesto, and a text to be deconstructed—while the historical Black Elk has faded from view. In this sweeping book, Joe Jackson provides the definitive biographical account of a figure whose dramatic life converged with some of the most momentous events in the history of the American West. Born in an era of rising violence between the Sioux, white settlers, and U.S. government troops, Black Elk killed his first man at the Little Bighorn, witnessed the death of his second cousin Crazy Horse, and traveled to Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Upon his return, he was swept up in the traditionalist Ghost Dance movement and shaken by the Massacre at Wounded Knee. But Black Elk was not a warrior, instead accepting the path of a healer and holy man, motivated by a powerful prophetic vision that he struggled to understand. Although Black Elk embraced Catholicism in his later years, he continued to practice the old ways clandestinely and never refrained from seeking meaning in the visions that both haunted and inspired him. In Black Elk, Jackson has crafted a true American epic, restoring to its subject the richness of his times and gorgeously portraying a life of heroism and tragedy, adaptation and endurance, in an era of permanent crisis on the Great Plains.

Book Summary:

The award-winning book that inspired an Apple Original series from Apple TV+ • Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink’s landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina—and her suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice. In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and maintain life amid chaos. After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, a doctor and two nurses were arrested and accused of injecting some of those patients with life-ending drugs. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. In a voice at once involving and fair, masterful and intimate, Fink exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals just how ill-prepared we are for the impact of large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. A remarkable book, engrossing from start to finish, Five Days at Memorial radically transforms your understanding of human nature in crisis. One of The New York Times’ Best Ten Books of the Year

Book Summary:

Untainted. When was the last time you though of purity in that way? For most of us, purity is something we want even when we don’t know how to go about striving for it. And in a society that promotes anything but being pure, the lines quickly become blurred between the holy and the unholy. What’s more disturbing is that those lines have begun to crossover into the mind-sets of Christians as well. In Thirty Days of Purity, Joseph Papcun challenges you to rediscover purity in every aspect of your spiritual life and explores how being pure in our Christianity is far more than what we take in with our eyes or what we think with our minds. Through daily devotionals and personal stories, he relates his own journey; he also reveals what the heart of the Father so desperately desires for us to know: Himself. Take the thirty-day journey out of what you know about purity and venture into the heart of God.
