Book Summary:

Why has the myth of Pygmalion and his ivory statue proved so inspirational for writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, and directors and creators of films and television series? The 'authorised' version of the story appears in the epic poem of transformations, Metamorphoses, by the first-century CE Latin poet Ovid; in which the bard Orpheus narrates the legend of the sculptor king of Cyprus whose beautiful carved woman was brought to life by the goddess Venus. Focusing on screen storylines with a Pygmalion subtext, from silent cinema to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lars and the Real Girl, this book looks at why and how the made-over or manufactured woman has survived through the centuries and what we can learn about this problematic model of 'perfection' from the perspective of the past and the present. Given the myriad representations of Ovid's myth, can we really make a modern text a tool of interpretation for an ancient poem? This book answers with a resounding 'yes' and explains why it is so important to give antiquity back its future.

Book Summary:

Pygmalion’s Chisel: For Women Who Are “Never Good Enough,” by Tracy M. Hallstead, examines the enduring critical presence in contemporary Western culture that scrutinizes, critiques, and sizes women down in their daily lives, despite rights gained through the centuries. Pygmalion was the ancient mythical sculptor who believed that all women were essentially flawed. He therefore endeavored to chisel to perfection a statue of a woman he called “Galatea.” Like the perpetually carved and perfected Galatea, women labor under Western culture’s a priori assumption that they are flawed, yet they are often unable to account for the self-criticism and self-doubt that result from this premise. As Hallstead analyzes the culture’s requirements for the perfect woman, she traces how cultural forces permeate women’s personal lives. In calling for solutions, she resurfaces the thinking of historical women who responded, rather than reacted, to the patriarchal culture that devalued them. In engaging these women of the past, whose struggles were eerily similar to our own, Hallstead encourages a responsive feminism that becomes the clear path leading outside Pygmalion’s chamber door.

It demonstrates how each of us is like a theater director, casting others into roles on our stage, even as others are casting us into their dramas.

Book Summary:

The Pygmalion myth, most famously told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses, has always fascinated artists. This fascination, due to the erotic potential of the story, resulted in an abundance of patriarchal re-narrations from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century. With the turn of the 20th century, however, the Pygmalion stories gradually changed under the influence of feminist thought and emancipation. The woman created by Pygmalion no longer remained a passive creature but began to resist her master and his male fantasies, sometimes in a subtle way, sometimes in open rebellion. The study at hand focuses on the development of the tale in the Anglo-Saxon literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. The author will analyze some of these modern Pygmalion versions, written by George Bernard Shaw, Carol Ann Duffy and Neil LaBute amongst other significant author

Book Summary:

Robert Manns' Selected Poems is comprised of two large poems and a number of smaller verses of various forms that recount is happy, sometimes frustrated, years of bachelor-hood. By a Turning Root is his invasion of several classical forms and a very sound illustration of the poet as visionary. Pygmalion and Galatea was first produced by Lucille Lortel at the White Barn Theatre in Westport and clearly signals an early influence by England's Christopher Fry. The sculptor makes a statue, then falls in love with it. That's transcendental love. When the statue comes to life, she's interested in more than love in that form. The comedy investigates Pygmalion's paradoxes.

Book Summary:

Book Summary:

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, TU Dortmund (Britische Kultur und Literaturwissenschaft), course: British Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: This term-paper will deal with language acquisition in G. B. Shaw's play "Pygmalion" and the question whether Eliza's acquisition of higher, conventional English is comparable to second-language acquisition. This means classifying Eliza's Cockney, the London lower-class sociolect of the English language, as a different and independent form of the 'Standard English', which she is taught by Henry Higgins. Following this classification, light can be shed upon the resemblances with second-language acquisition. Phonetician Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering, are both experts concerning languages and agree to a bet, which is essential for this paper. This bet includes Higgins to teach Eliza the higher English language combined with the appropriate manners. Higgins supposes that transforming Eliza's speech, behaviour and appearance will make her a convincing duchess in the higher society of London. Although Pygmalion's preface is called “A Professor of Phonetics” and alludes to Higgins’ profession, the play does not explicitly concentrate on the process of Eliza's linguistic and social transformation but demonstrates the outcome of her process. Nevertheless, the paper will focus on the limited amount of information concerning Eliza's sociolect and her language acquisition in order to see whether it is comparable to second-language acquisition. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the paper will deal with the issue of language and acquisition of language from a modern point of view. The term sociolect for example “emerged in the 1960s” (Ammon 2004, 200) and was not known in Shaw's lifetime.

Book Summary:

Book Summary:

Pushed to the height of its illusionistic powers during the first centuries of the Roman Empire, sculpture was largely abandoned with the ascendancy of Christianity, as the apparent animation of the material image and practices associated with sculpture were considered both superstitious and idolatrous. In Pygmalion’s Power, Thomas E. A. Dale argues that the reintroduction of architectural sculpture after a hiatus of some seven hundred years arose with the particular goal of engaging the senses in a Christian religious experience. Since the term “Romanesque” was coined in the nineteenth century, the reintroduction of stone sculpture around the mid-eleventh century has been explained as a revivalist phenomenon, one predicated on the desire to claim the authority of ancient Rome. In this study, Dale proposes an alternative theory. Covering a broad range of sculpture types—including autonomous cult statuary in wood and metal, funerary sculpture, architectural sculpture, and portraiture—Dale shows how the revitalized art form was part of a broader shift in emphasis toward spiritual embodiment and affective piety during the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. Adding fresh insight to scholarship on the Romanesque, Pygmalion’s Power borrows from trends in cultural anthropology to demonstrate the power and potential of these sculptures to produce emotional effects that made them an important sensory part of the religious culture of the era.

Book Summary:

Every individual must know what makes them work hard to achieve their goals. It is not just money that makes people feel motivated, there are various other intrinsic and extrinsic factors that must be considered when we have to motivate others and ourselves. Various aspects of and different approaches to team motivation are explained in this book. Most managers do not realize the importance and need for motivation, but always expect the best from their team. The application of the Pygmalion Effect is never in practice, which would otherwise enhance the performance of an individual by simply putting faith and confidence in him or her. This book illustrates how this theory can be applied within organizations to achieve better results at the individual and team levels, eventually meeting organizational goals. In real life, it is usually seen that with a small failure, people tend to lose focus, interest and motivation to do something. It is hard to accept failure, erase it from memory or from a chapter of your life and move ahead. But there is no other way- you have to live your life so that you keep moving ahead. In this book, you will find some stories of success through failure of eminent individuals and also some inspiring stories. This book will change your views on motivation and unveil how crucial it is in life.

Book Summary:

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,5, University of Regensburg, language: English, abstract: The myth of Pygmalion as told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses contains, according to Geoffrey Miles, “one of the most potent male fantasies” – that is the creation “of a perfectly beautiful woman designed to the lover’s specifications and utterly devoted to her creator”. The fact that Pygmalion’s literally man-made lover comes to life at the end of the story probably was the reason for artists’ fascination with the myth. Ever since antiquity, patriarchal literature produced countless renarrations of the story about Pygmalion’s love for his statue, and most of them were especially intrigued with the erotic potential of Ovid’s tale. Yet this leads to the question how the awakening of feminist thought since the early 20th century influenced the myth’s reception. More precisely, how did feminist versions of the tale alter its content and the relationship of its protagonists? This question forms the basis of this thesis paper which will examine, by means of several Pygmalion versions of the 20th and 21st centuries, the myth’s development from a patriarchal towards a feminist tale. Texts by authors like Angela Carter, Neil LaBute, G.B. Shaw and others will be analysed.

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject American Studies - Literature, , language: English, abstract: Apparently, the general public was slanted to underestimate and command over ladies. Aside from directing their conduct and particular requirements of them, these ladies are likewise underrated. Notwithstanding when they have administration positions, they are as yet thought to be second rate compared to men. For example, it is clear from the two plays that fundamental rights like training and voting were not permitted to women. Also, both novels demonstrate that men needed to act more than moms; they looked down on women. Regardless of their enlivening and clatter for autonomy, the difficulties ladies need to persist are as yet incalculable

Book Summary:

Book Summary:

"The book is organized around five distinct themes that include studies on Graves's own literary criticism, offer new insights into his poetry, produce commentary on his often overlooked fictional output, make some reflections on the origins and importance of his White Goddess, and examine some literary crosscurrents that have pollinated Graves's work."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Summary:

오드리 헵번(Audrey Hepburn)의 마이 페어 레이디(My Fair Lady)(1964) : 뮤지컬 마이 페어 레이디(My Fair Lady)는 조지 버나드 쇼의 피그말리온(Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw)(1913)를 원작으로 제작한 것입니다. 오비디우스(Publius Ovidius Naso)의 변신 이야기(The Metamorphoses) 03. 조지 버나드 쇼의 피그말리온(Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw)(1913) 04. (How to Create the Perfect Wife)(2013) 06. (Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw)(1913) Preface to Pygmalion ACT Ⅰ ACT Ⅱ ACT Ⅲ ACT Ⅳ ACT Ⅴ The Rest of the Story 부록(Appendix). (The Hitchhiker's Guide to Worlds’s Classics) A01. (How to listen to FREE audio Books legally?) Book Summary:

The fantasy of a male creator constructing his perfect woman dates back to the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Yet as technology has advanced over the past century, the figure of the lifelike manmade woman has become nearly ubiquitous, popping up in everything from Bride of Frankenstein to Weird Science to The Stepford Wives. Now Julie Wosk takes us on a fascinating tour through this bevy of artificial women, revealing the array of cultural fantasies and fears they embody. My Fair Ladies considers how female automatons have been represented as objects of desire in fiction and how “living dolls” have been manufactured as real-world fetish objects. But it also examines the many works in which the “perfect” woman turns out to be artificial—a robot or doll—and thus becomes a source of uncanny horror. Finally, Wosk introduces us to a variety of female artists, writers, and filmmakers—from Cindy Sherman to Shelley Jackson to Zoe Kazan—who have cleverly crafted their own images of simulated women. Anything but dry, My Fair Ladies draws upon Wosk’s own experiences as a young female Playboy copywriter and as a child of the “feminine mystique” era to show how images of the artificial woman have loomed large over real women’s lives. Lavishly illustrated with film stills, artwork, and vintage advertisements, this book offers a fresh look at familiar myths about gender, technology, and artistic creation.

Book Summary:

Book Summary:

"Pygmalion and the Image" is a poem form The Earthly Paradise by William Morris which is a lengthy collection of retellings of various myths and legends from Greece and Scandinavia. The poem is exceptionally balanced in all its parts. Over all the other versions, its superiority is not because of the manner narration but stems from its greater spirituality, a more refined feeling rather than a more refined form. Before the appearance of "Pygmalion and the Image," each narrator of the legend had resided mainly on the physical side, sensuous according to his temperament, of the tale. It's the only poem from the collection for the illustration of which Burne-Jones actually executed a complete series of pictures; and though the finished paintings are four in number, and the original designs, were twelve, the numerically smaller set is complete in the best sense. Not only does it illustrate fully the text and spirit of Morris's poem, but each picture in it, though finished with the loving care and elaboration which Burne-Jones lavished on his paintings, fails of its full significance unless considered in its relation to the series of which it forms a part." The illustrations consist: The Heart Desires; The Hand Refrains; The Godhead Fires; The Soul Attains

Book Summary:
